Banner day for N.C. State

The N.C. State basketball team may be watching the NCAA Tournament from Raleigh and the baseball team may be stumbling out of the gate early this season but that surely doesn't mean N.C. State has nothing to be proud of athletically.

On Saturday, two Wolfpack athletes brought national titles back to Raleigh and gave State fans something to cheer about.

Wrestler Darrion Caldwell upset top-ranked Brent Metcalf in the 149-lb. title match in St. Louis. The impressive performance by Caldwell was aired on ESPN and served as the upset of the finals. Caldwell is the only wrestler to ever defeat Metcalf. Caldwell beat Metcalf once last season and then again on Saturday. The junior also received the tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler award following the win.

In swimming and diving, Kristin Davies won the NCAA platform dive competition in Texas with a score of 339.65. The championship was the first ever by an N.C. State diver. She also became the first female swimmer or diver to ever win a National Championship.

On another note, the gymnastics team won the EAGL conference championship over the weekend.

The basketball team may not have finished like N.C. State fans wanted, but people should be proud to know that other teams and individuals are representing N.C. State athletics well.
