Let the Madness begin

The games are underway already and the most exciting three weeks in sports is here.

There is something special about the NCAA Tournament which makes it different than any other playoff systems or postseason play out there. It's not that for three weeks the country is mesmerized by basketball or that bracket pools dominate discussion in offices across the country. The reason people cannot get enough of March Madness is simple, at least in my opinion.

The little man has a chance.

Like right now for example, Memphis is getting beat by Cal-State Northridge. The only thing I know about that team is that they are from the area of the 1994 earthquake. But on this day they could beat a tournament favorite and have a chance to continue on and win a National Championship, in theory.

Now I know the big guns usually win the tournament and dominate discussion, but every year there is at least one (and usually more) team that makes a run. That is what makes the tournament great. It's unlike any other playoff system in college sports or professional sports. It's not like college football's retarded BCS system or like even like the NFL's playoff bonanza. I do admit the NFL playoffs are amazing, but they just aren't quite the same as the NCAA Tournament. Random women who work at banks and middle schools don't care about the NFL playoffs or the BCS games, but I bet you they have a bracket filled out.

Now that I got that out, it's time to go watch some games (in class on my laptop, thank you Internet).
